SAN ANGELO, Texas – Sailors from the Center for Information Warfare Training (CIWT) Detachment Goodfellow and other service members from Goodfellow Air Force Base competed in their own version of the Army-Navy service academy rivalry game, Dec. 1.

The opening ceremony began with a Navy frocking ceremony, followed by colors performed by the base’s joint color guard and the official coin toss by Air Force Col. Ricky Mills, commander of the 17th Training Wing.

Navy beat Army with a score of 19-13 in their first win in the last nine years of the annual challenge. The Navy team also won the championship game of the base’s 2017 intramural league.

"I work with the Army on a daily basis here, so there are many friends on both sides of the ball," said Chief Petty Officer Matthew Moser. "This time of year we become rivals on the field, so it's really amazing to see the Navy and Army pride when meeting up for bragging rights."

During the last minute of the game, the Navy’s quarterback, Petty Officer 1st Class Cody Sykes, scored the go ahead touchdown on a five yard run. The Army attempted a comeback, but ran out of time.

The Army was down 13-6 at halftime, but shortly after the second half, tied the game 13-13. The rest of the half was a defensive performance until Sykes was able to shake loose and score the winning touchdown.

After the game, the players shook hands and congratulated each other over a well-played game, and look forward to another faceoff in 2018.
