Marine Corps Community Services hosted a Camp Commander’s Cup Basketball Tournament Dec. 2 in the Foster Fieldhouse aboard Camp Foster.
Four teams from Camp Kinser, Camp Foster and Marine Corps Air Station Futenma competed in the tournament. The tournament was double elimination, and each game had two, 20-minute periods of play.
“This event allows junior Marines to get out and work on their leadership as coaches and players,” said Nathan Hill, an MCCS sports coordinator on Camp Foster. “Marines and sailors get the opportunity to have fun together while competing, and maybe earn some bragging rights.”
Marines and sailors from the Southern camps created teams within their units to compete. The tournament for the Northern camps, Schwab, Hansen and Courtney, is scheduled for Dec. 8-10. After competing in their respective tournament, the top teams from the Northern and Southern will face off in the Commanding General’s Cup.
"Events like this builds our chemistry as players and betters our camaraderie,” said Sgt. Montonio S. Kenan, a postal clerk with Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Installations Pacific-Marine Corps Base Camp Butler, Japan. “It brings us together outside of our work environment by allowing us to play basketball, and represent our respective camp.”
Even though the games were highly competitive, the athletes were still able to laugh and build friendships.
“It feels good to return time and time again,” said Kenan, a team captain of the H&S Bn. team, The Squad, representing Camp Foster. “I love basketball and have a passion for it, so it’s nice to have other Marines come out and use their skills as they showcase their talents.”
