Six hundred fifty of the 1,056 Afghan soldiers that graduated from the 21st Commando Qualification Course at Camp Commando, Kabul on Dec. 6, 2017 will attend the inaugural Cobra Strike Mobility Course at Pul-e-Charkhi beginning in early Jan. The majority of the CDOQC class were previously assigned to the same conventional Afghan National Army battalion or “kandak”.
The successful transformation of traditional ANA units into the Commando force enables the Afghan National Army Special Operations Command to create seven additional Mobile Strike Kandaks in the next four years. The MSKs will provide the regionally-aligned Special Operations Brigades a game-changing operational reach to pursue adversaries over Afghanistan’s rugged terrain in all weather conditions.
The first Commando MSK will graduate from the Cobra Strike Mobility Course in late April 2018 for employment against the Taliban during the beginning of the traditional Afghan fighting season.
ANASOC’s Commandos and Special Forces, along with the General Command of Police Special Units and the Special Mission Wing, form the cornerstone for the Afghan 2020 Road Map. The Road Map is the Afghan government’s plan to provide enhanced security and stability that includes the doubling the size of the ASSF.
