SAN DIEGO – The thumping music, colorful attire and colossal physical feats of the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) superstars set the stage for a bold and patriotic display of gratitude during the 15th annual WWE Tribute to the Troops, held December 5, on Naval Base San Diego.
“It is a privilege to honor our servicemen and women for their commitment and sacrifice to our nation,” said Vince McMahon, WWE chairman and CEO. “Tribute to the Troops is our most meaningful show of the year, and we are proud to continue the tradition at Naval Base San Diego.”
WWE superstars and officials used a multifaceted approach to thank military personnel and their families. Activities included a bullying prevention rally, hospital visits and meet and greet opportunities at various locations, including Naval Base San Diego, Naval Air Station North Island and Naval Medical Center San Diego.
“This is one of the things we look forward to all year,” said WWE superstar Mojo Rawley. “Everyone has been happy to have us here, but I think we are even happier to be here and meet Sailors and Marines. It is really cool to be a part of it.”
In addition to the multitude of opportunities Sailors had to meet their favorite superstars face- to- face, WWE also hosted a wrestling event exclusively for service members on Naval Base San Diego.
“This is the first time I have been a part of something like this, I will always remember it, ”said Yeoman 2nd Class Christopher Brock attached to Naval Base San Diego. “My favorite part of Tribute to the Troops has been seeing how appreciative they are of us.”
Attendees were not only treated to the in-ring action, multi-platinum musician, Machine Gun Kelly performed a live concert. Kelly performed his new single, "Home," featuring Bebe Rexha and X Ambassadors.
"I've been wanting to perform for the troops since I got my music deal so this is a big moment for me, said Kelly.” He also performed the song "Let You Go" off of his album titled Bloom.
Service member and superstars alike revealed a mutual admiration and respect for one another. One Sailor spoke about her experience meeting the WWE superstars.
“It seemed like they are just as eager to see us as we are to see them, it was awesome” said Hull Technician 3rd Class Yolanda Matthews assigned to USS Dewey (DDG 105). “It is amazing they do stuff like this.”
The Tribute to the Troops event was taped and a two-hour special will air on Thursday, Dec. 14, at 8/7 central on the USA Network.
