MONROE, Utah – Veterans Day is an opportunity for us to honor the brave men and women from all walks of life who have stepped forward to defend our nation throughout our history. Today, nearly 200,000 Army Reserve Soldiers are serving the Army and the Nation in 20 time zones across the globe.
Every year Mrs. Jadie Stevenett, 3rd Grade teacher at Monroe Elementary in Monroe, Utah, asks parents if they have an active duty servicemember or veteran family member the class can recognize for Veterans Day. This year the class had 10.
“Teaching the students about Veterans and Veterans Day is something extra we have to squeeze in to our daily instruction,” said Stevenett. “We make veterans a big deal here.”
However, this year would be a little different. Mrs. Stevenett provided two of her students, Paysley and Emma Pieper, an unexpected surprise. Their great uncle, Command Sgt. Maj. Robert Breck, the command sergeant major for the 807th Medical Command (Deployment Support), would be coming to their class to talk about Veterans Day.
“They sent letters to me, my father and brother for Veterans Day,” said Breck. “They asked a lot of very colorful questions and were very smart about the military."
Many of the students have family members in the National Guard, or a family member who had served. The U.S. has been at war for more than 16 years. We now have the largest population of young Veterans since the Vietnam War.
"I spent an hour visiting with and talking to the kids about Veterans Day and the military," said Breck. "It was a great visit for me."
CSM Breck plays a significant role as the CSM in helping build and sustain the most capable, combat-ready and lethal federal reserve force in the history of the Nation. The Army Reserve has approximately 54 percent of the Army’s medical capability. In addition, the Army Reserve provides approximately 67 percent of medical groups to the Army, and approximately 62 percent of hospitals.
“He was amazing and answered all of their questions, said Stevenett. “I told them that they had a real life hero to come see them, and I think it was fun for him too.
