Fort McCoy, Wis., was established in 1909. Here is a look back at some installation history from December 2017 and back.
71 Years Ago — Dec. 23, 1946
In line with the spirit of the Christmas season, troops of Task Force Frost donated more than $377 to be used for a Christmas party for the children of the State Public School for Dependent and Neglected Children in Sparta, Wis.
Several weeks beforehand, a committee representing the various Task Force units visited the school and, on behalf of the men, presented the 300 children with $370. The committee was so impressed by the gratitude of the youngsters and the real need for the money that they decided to raise enough to be used for a Christmas party, so that the funds obtained could buy much-needed year-round athletic equipment and other playthings.
Task Force troops gave generously, and as a result, the children of the State School were given a Christmas party at Service Club 3. Refreshments were served, and individual gifts were given to each child by Santa Claus.
65 Years Ago — Dec. 19, 1952
Col. Harlan R. Statham, commanding officer of Camp McCoy, was reassigned to Trieste, Italy, and left his Wisconsin post Dec. 19. Replacing Statham as commanding officer was Col. Fred. C. Dyer of Indianapolis, commanding officer of the 306th Logistical Command. Statham became the post commander in February 1952 but served as deputy commander under Brig. Gen. Eugene L. Harrison for four months during the summer training program.
30 Years Ago — Dec. 3, 1987
Eleven Soldiers from the 205th Light Fighter Academy participated in a Dec. 3 jump from a from a C-130 aircraft. Fort McCoy's Badger Drop Zone was the destination for the jump. Aircraft support was provided by the 440th Tactical Air Wing of Milwaukee.
20 Years Ago — Dec. 12, 1997
The U.S. Marine Corps recorded a cold-weather survival video at Fort McCoy from Dec. 2-13. The Video offers 'instruction about preparing to' perform cold-weather missions. The video may be used by. All service personnel at cold-weather sites.
10 Years Ago — Dec. 14, 2007
The Dec. 14 issue of the Fort McCoy Triad was its last issue. The newspaper resumed publication Jan. 11, 2008, as "The Real McCoy."
The name change previously was announced as a harbinger of the installation celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2009. The name change reflects and honors the post's heritage and legacy of service.
