OAK HARBOR, Wash. (Dec. 8, 2017) – Service members and spectators gathered for the annual Pacific Northwest area Army vs. Navy flag football game, held at Costen Turner Field, Dec. 8.

This year was the 18th meeting between Sailors from Navy Region Northwest and Soldiers from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, leading to the Navy coming out on top at the end of four quarters with a score of 14-6.

Navy’s first drive ended in an interception, and after Army’s drive stalled out, Navy was fortunate enough to put the first touchdown points on the board. Navy finished the second quarter with another touchdown heading into halftime increasing their lead 12-0.

“We have nothing but warriors and competitors out there today, and so far, we’re leaving it all on the field,” said Joint Base Lewis-McChord Garrison Command Sergeant Major and honorary coach Rich Mulryan. “It’s good to see the competition between branches, but we all understand that, at the end of the day, we’re all on the same team.”

After halftime, Navy drove the ball downfield, but after throwing an interception at the goal line, possession returned to Army. During the ensuing play, after an Army fumble in the end zone, Navy recovered for a two-point safety. Not about to be shut out, halfway through the fourth quarter, Army put their first and only points on the scoreboard with a pass caught in the end zone making the final score 14-6, in favor of Navy.

With close to 100 personnel attending tryouts this year, Navy’s team was comprised of some of the top athletes from around the Puget Sound, including former Iowa State college quarterback, Master-at-Arms 3rd Class Jerome Tiller.

“We all came to play, we all played cleanly, and we had a beautiful day to do it,” said Tiller. “Even playing for different branches, no matter what kind of situation we may come upon in the past, present, or future, we will always come together as one military.”

After 18 meetings, Navy garnered their 12th win in the friendly rivalry. Coaches, players, family, and friends all came away with a shared sense of solidarity over the hard-fought game.

“This is a great tradition that we have here in the Pacific Northwest,” said Capt. Geoff Moore, honorary coach and commanding officer of Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. “This emulates the bigger game coming up, and I love having the opportunity to put these two teams on the field ahead of the big game in the spirit of camaraderie. Go Navy!”
