Marine Corps Installations-East motorcycle riders are traversing roads more safely thanks to a level III motorcycle rider training course aboard Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., December 11-12, 2017.
The level III curriculum was geared for advanced motorcycle riders and covered advanced motorcycle handling including how to safely and properly use brakes, perform U-turns and techniques for scanning the road to anticipate threats to a safe ride.
“We believe we teach some things that go above and beyond what the new riders school can demonstrate,” said Nick Ienatsch, the lead instructor of the training. “We are very motivated to help Marines.”
One of the instructors, Bill Sink, had a firsthand experience using the life-saving techniques the curriculum teaches.
One day Sink was going around a large, sweeping corner on a Pennsylvania road when a truck crossed over the center line into his lane. Rather than panicking, he used the techniques he teaches students – properly applied his brakes, went to the inside of the truck and saved himself from getting injured.
“Most people are afraid to go to the brakes as they are leaned over through a corner,” Sink said. “By applying the brakes properly, I avoided a bad situation.”
“In the dire moment when you need skills [is when you’ll be thankful for the training],” said Ienatsch.
