Every year the Secretary of Defense presents maintenance awards across eleven categories, covering various aspects of DoD organic maintenance capability and training to foreign partners.
The IMS Team received the recognition for its work with the Philippine National Police – Maritime Special Operations Unit, located in the southern Philippines. Since 2007 the IMS Team has collaborated with US Interagency partners to provide specialized training in maritime maintenance and operations. These efforts enabled this Philippine waterborne law enforcement agency to better patrol and secure the Sulu Sea region; a highly trafficked area between the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
The IMS Team is comprised of Navy and Coast Guard reservists possessing unique skills in maritime maintenance and law enforcement; many of whom work as police officers or public servants in their civilian careers.
This is the first such award for JIATF West.
JIATF West is a standing task force under US Pacific Command located at Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii, providing counterdrug support and training to partner nations in the Indo-Pacific region.
