VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Information Professional Basic Course (IPBC) students with Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) Virginia Beach recently visited Navy expeditionary commands in the local area.
Nineteen students from IPBC, along with their IWTC Virginia Beach instructors, toured the different expeditionary commands as part of the 20-week IPBC course, designed to prepare the students to operate in any environment. The tour was hosted by Naval Special Warfare Group (NSWG) 2’s Mobile Communication Team, NSWG 10’s Special Reconnaissance Team 2, and NSWG 4’s Coastal Riverine Squadron 4.
Each site provided valuable community insight into the expeditionary communications environment, exposing the students to the organizations, mission sets, training, and equipment used to support expeditionary communications. Additionally, each command presented static displays providing examples of the capabilities offered to the warfighter and how they employ them globally at a moment’s notice
This marks the second site visit conducted by the relatively new 20-week IPBC, which did not cover expeditionary communications in such depth in the past. Events like these have been well received by the participating commands as well as the students. The students’ ability to gain first-hand knowledge of this previously under-highlighted part of the information professional community will pay exponential dividends in the fleet.
Lt. Brad Clark, an experienced expeditionary communicator, spearheaded the visits. His expertise has been pivotal in the development of multiple new topics regarding expeditionary communications, and in generating some great opportunities to visit these commands.
“Thank you to these commands for supporting our class” said Cmdr. Andrew Boyden, IWTC Virginia Beach's commanding officer. “We continue to reach out across all communities for opportunities to have the Navy’s up and coming information professionals get hands on experience and expose them to as much of their community as possible before they head off to their first tours”.
IWTC Virginia Beach, as part of the Center for Information Warfare Training, provides a continuum of training to Navy and joint service personnel, preparing them to conduct information warfare (IW) across the full spectrum of military operations.
IWTC Virginia Beach currently offers 69 courses of instruction in information technology, cryptology, and intelligence with an instructor and support staff of 290 military, civilian, and contract members who train over 6,000 students every year at five training sites in the Hampton Roads area. It also oversees four learning sites at Jacksonville and Mayport, Florida; Kings Bay, Georgia; and Groton, Connecticut.
