One domino effect of this can be families without a source of income because of lack of work. This is especially distressing coming into the holiday season, when things can get especially tight.
Airmen from the 156th Airlift Wing recently visited a few children’s school in the San Juan area to distribute more than 530 meal disaster food boxes donated by Federal Emergency Management Agency to try and help feed the younger population of Puerto Ricans.
A visit to one of the local schools revealed that most of the school was being taught in a room without light or power. The excitement of the kid’s faces to receive a food package including treats and snacks different from the norm was a sentiment echoed by many airman on the mission.
“I am glad we are able to help out the schools even just a little bit with these donations,” 2nd Lt. Jeffrey Ramos, health services administrator, “It is really important for us to make sure we help out these kids and our community which supports the future of Puerto Rico.”
The students from all the schools that were visited by the airmen were excited to see the group with the unexpected gift. Many of the kids gave high-fives, giggled as they practiced English and thanked the airmen for coming around.
“Puerto Rico is my home, I love this place,” said Tech. Sgt. Francisco Calvo, a member of the 156th Airlift Wing who has been on state active duty since the hurricanes hit in Sept., “I would do whatever it takes to help the people in my community get back on their feet, and I would especially do anything for the kids here.”
