BEMOWO PISKIE, Poland — Polish soldiers lined up and sat on the ground, simulating how they would sit on a helicopter, waiting to hear the order to evacuate the bird. The order was issued, Polish troops with U.S. Sapper engineers started running and broke off into two teams.
One team began to lay down suppressive fire while the other team bounded forward. The Polish soldiers continued moving like this over the rough terrain until they reached a crossing that needed to be cleared. The U.S. Sapper engineers went to work clearing the path with explosives which allowed the Polish troops to continue on.
The Polish soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 15th Mechanized Brigade were instructed on and took turns performing platoon maneuvering with the U.S. Soldiers assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment at the Guadnek training range in Orzysz, Poland, Dec. 14, 2017.
"The recent fire and maneuver training conducted by the Polish 1-15 MECH BN is just the beginning of a progressive training plan,” said U.S. Army Lt.Col. Scott Cheney, the Battle Group Poland commander.
After the Polish soldiers conducted their dry run, U.S. Soldiers suited up, locked and load and mentally prepared to do their run of the range as a live fire exercise. With the Polish nearby, the U.S. Soldiers started the exercise.
“Our goal is to ensure our allies understand Combined Arms Maneuver and we will accomplish this through section and platoon live-fire exercises to be executed in the upcoming months,” said Cheney. “While our vehicles, weapons and communication systems are different, the basics of fire and maneuver remain the same."
Just as the U.S. ran the Polish through on their run, U.S. Soldiers lined up as if they were on a helicopter simulating being dropped off in a landing zone. When on the ground, one team found cover behind berms that the rough landscape generously supplied and began firing their weapons producing suppressive fire for the other team.
While the U.S. Soldiers performed these exercises, the Polish would observe and be instructed on how the U.S. conducted combat maneuvers.
“We watched our colleagues from the U.S. and learned how they move their platoon,” said Polish Cpl. Nick Oleksa, a soldier with the 1-15 MECH BN. “These exercises are very important because they allow us to work together, learn to trust each other, rely on the other person and there is nothing more important on the battlefield.”
Battle Group Poland helps in supporting Atlantic Resolve and in demonstrating the U.S. commitment to the security of NATO and NATO allies. This unique, multinational battle group, comprised of U.S., U.K., Croatian and Romanian soldiers serve with the Polish 15th MECH BN as a deterrence force in northeast Poland in support of NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence.
