Dr. Lonnie Parker, an electrical engineer at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport, has been named Modern Day Technology Leader by the U.S. Black Engineering & IT magazine and the Black Engineer of the Year Award Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Conference.
The award honors bright men and women who are shaping the future of STEM.
Parker has made useful and innovative technical contributions to his department as well as other departments and the fleet since beginning his career at NUWC Division Newport in October 2012.He conducts research in areas of autonomy for unmanned systems as applied to air, surface and undersea environments, often resulting in peer-reviewed journal articles. He also attends and presents his research in national and international forums.
Parker is the principal investigator for the imaging development portion of the Submarine Advanced Development Processing project. He also manages the Sensors and Sonar Systems Department’s internal investment portfolio that includes more than 50 research projects with a budget of more than $5 million.
Parker received his undergraduate and master's degrees in electrical engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y., and his doctorate in electrical and computer engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Ga. He is a former resident of Pittsburg, Pa., and currently resides in Pawtucket, R.I.
Parker will receive his award at the 2018 BEYA STEM Conference being held Feb. 8-10 in Washington, D.C.
NUWC Division Newport, part of the Naval Sea System Command, is one of two divisions of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center. NUWC Division Newport’s mission is to provide research, development, test and evaluation, engineering and fleet support for submarines, autonomous underwater systems, undersea offensive and defensive weapons systems, and countermeasures. NUWC’s other division is located in Keyport, Wash.
