Nine Sailors assigned to Center for Information Warfare Detachment Fort Gordon were awarded t-shirts for the third bi-annual “Beat the OIC” physical readiness test challenge, Dec. 19.

The challenge recognized exceptional fitness performance during the Cycle-2 2017 Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA).

Chief Warrant Officer 4 Michael Lester, officer-in-charge, sets numbers to beat in the push-ups and sit-ups portion of the test, and also for each of the cardio events: run, treadmill, bike and swim. The numbers that CWO4 Lester sets aren’t exactly easy to beat. For example, this cycle a Sailor would have needed to do 90 pushups and 110 sit-ups. For the cardio portion, the Sailor would need to complete their 1 ½ mile run in 9:59, the treadmill run in 9:43 or burn 193 calories on the bike.

“Whether your motivation to improve your overall physical fitness is personal pride, to beat your own scores, a t-shirt, or to be exempt from the next cycle, it doesn’t matter,” said Chief Cryptologic Technician (Interpretive) Ronald Burk, the detachment’s command fitness leader. “What matters is that you’re out there doing it”.

Lester presented the t-shirts in front of the detachment during command quarters to the nine top performers that beat him in at least one of each category in the test. This cycle, the Assistant Command Fitness Leader, Cryptologic Technician (Collection) 1st Class Genesis Reyes was the only Sailor to beat the OIC in two categories. Cryptologic Technician (Maintenance) 2nd Class Matthew Goclowski burned 212 calories on the bike, making him the first Sailor to beat the OIC in that category while also setting a new command record.

According to Burk, 74% of the staff scored an excellent or higher on the Cycle-2 2017 PFA. Additionally, the detachment has had a 100% pass rate on the PFA for three consecutive cycles.

“To have our OIC set the example and encourage a culture of fitness speaks volumes about not only the CFL program, but the detachment as a whole,” said Burk. “This command is incredible at promoting that culture, and our results are a testament to our Sailors’ work ethic and a truly awesome CFL team.”
