Capt. Karen Miller, 37th Flying Training Squadron instructor pilot, was selected to attend the Inter-American Squadron Officer School earlier this this year and will attend Feb. 21, 2018, at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas.
Miller is one of eight Airmen, the only pilot, in Air Force to be selected for ISOS in fiscal year 2018. She said she was excited to be selected for the school due to the extensive selection process.
“I was actually shocked,” Miller said. “To be honest I never thought I was never going to get [selected].”
ISOS is an eight-week course which is designed to develop dynamic Airmen ready to lead air, space and cyberspace in an expeditionary war-fighting environment.
The course is the equivalent to the Squadron Officer School taught at Air University on Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, however ISOS is taught entirely in Spanish and adapted for Latin American and U.S. Air Force captains who possess the language skill.
The program prepares more officers to be available to serve in positions requiring interaction with Latin American countries and their military forces, according to an Air Force Personnel Center release earlier this year.
Miller was also highlighted in Diálogo Magazine and featured on their 2018 Calendar. Diálogo is military magazine published by U.S. Southern Command in multiple different languages.
All her life, Miller said she wanted to be a pilot. She had researched getting her pilot’s license but she said it was too expensive. She was involved in the Junior ROTC program at her high school which peaked her interest in attending the U.S. Air Force Academy and was selected to be a pilot. She completed Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training and was chosen to be a First Assignment Instructor Pilot at the 37th FTS on Columbus Air Force Base, Mississippi. She is also a part of the Language Enable Airman Program.
“I’m in the LEAP for Portuguese and French, not for Spanish,” Miller said. “I just happen to speak Spanish as well. Leading up to my selection, I went into the Education Center and took the Spanish [Defense Language Proficiency Test] because there is a minimum language requirement for [ISOS]”
Miller is currently a FAIP, however she has received her next assignment as a KC-10 Extender pilot at Travis AFB, California. Looking toward her future, Miller said she wants to become a foreign area officer and eventually become an air attaché.
