CAMP TAJI MILITARY COMPLEX, Iraq – The Sergeant Major of the Army Daniel A. Dailey visited troops at the Camp Taji Military Complex Resiliency Center in Iraq to include Soldiers from the 449th Combat Aviation Brigade, Dec. 19.
His visit was one of many on his tour to meet with Soldiers serving overseas, allowing them to voice their opinions regarding education, training and the introduction of the new prototype for the pink and green uniform.
“We’re not going to do it unless it’s the right thing to do,” said Dailey. “We are the most trusted organization in America and we’re losing our identity as American Soldiers.”
His statement came after acknowledging that the Army combat uniforms have undergone multiple changes, some of which have not been popular amongst Soldiers. He took time to address some of the concerns about the new uniforms.
“Does the Army have better things to do besides changing uniforms?” said Dailey. “Come on, we’re the United States Army, we can multi-task.”
Dailey stressed the need of the Army to have a professional uniform and insisted the current dress blue uniform is here to stay. He promised the enlisted Soldiers of the 449th CAB that the additional uniform is a way to find middle-ground and would be free-of-charge.
Currently, Soldiers wear the combat uniform or dress blue uniform for day-to-day operations but historically that has not always been the case. The combat uniform was reserved for the field and training environments while the dress uniform was worn for more formal events. The Pink and Green uniform will allow for a middle ground, business uniform.
Dailey discussed why Soldiers were once told not to wear the Army uniform for travel, citing the negative perceptions the American public sees when they look at the combat uniform. He further discussed why the policy was eventually overturned.
“The American people need to see our Soldiers”, said Dailey.
Following his comments, he recognized Soldiers on a job well done, to include two Soldiers from the 29th CAB, the unit the 449th CAB replaced. He concluded the visit with one statement that he wanted all the Soldiers to remember.
“Having an Army is a requirement,” said Dailey. “Serving is choice.”
