Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 366 had its change of command ceremony aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River, Dec. 14, 2017. Lt. Col. Jade Campbell relinquished command to Lt. Col. Wyland Leadbetter.
HMH-366 was originally activated Sept. 30, 1994 at Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. On Oct. 1, 2000 the squadron was deactivated as part of a realignment plan to redistribute the units’ personnel and aircraft. The unit was finally reactivated September 2008 and reached its full operational capability October 2009.
Now the unit is located aboard MCAS New River and continues to support Marines wherever they are needed.
“As a commander of HMH-366, it’s been my dream to be entrusted with leading Marines,” said Campbell. “From day one, my goal for this squadron has been to be as ready as we can be to support Marines on the other side of the river and be professional in doing it.”
As Campbell relinquished command, he spoke highly of Leadbetter’s leadership.
“Lt. Col. Wyland Leadbetter is a friend of mine from way back,” said Campbell. “This squadron is in great shape. Leadbetter has a great reputation, and he actually served with this squadron previously. He’s got history, he knows the squadron, the Marines know him and they’re going to continue to do great things.”
Leadbetter served with the Marines of HMH-366 in 2010 where he deployed in support of operation Unified Protector and Odyssey Guard.
“I’ve been in the Hammerhead family before. I was the maintenance officer a few years back, so for me it’s like coming home,” said Leadbetter. “I couldn’t be happier.”
Leadbetter wants to work on maintaining and improving the squadron.
“We’ve got a lot coming up and I would say the future is going to go the same way the past has gone, which is to continue to provide world class assault support,” said Leadbetter.
