    SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN

Story by Petty Officer 2nd Class Jamal McNeill

    USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN 76)

SOUTH PACIFIC (July 4, 2017) – Three months out to sea; working, eating, sleeping, and relaxing on a war ship with around 5,000 people can put a strain on a person’s mental, physical, and social well-being. Sometimes a little time to yourself and privacy is needed, which is something that doesn’t come at a premium when you live on a ship.
Fortunately for some Sailors, they will get a little bit more peace and privacy when we pull back in to Yokosuka in August as they will be able to move back in to Home Port Ashore (HPA) barracks.
“Only the 299 Sailors that live in building 3387 will move back in when we return in August,” said Chief Logistics Specialist (SW/AW/IW) Makita Lewis, HPA coordinator.
For the rest of the E-4 and below Sailors, they will have to wait to move in to HPA barracks.
“As of now, the schedule has us doing full building move-ins by August 2018,” said Lewis. “We will only have two buildings now. 3387 from the 6th deck down and building 3333, with eight decks, will also be a Ronald Reagan building.”
In total Ronald Reagan will have approximately 1,300 rooms available. The order distribution of rooms will be by seniority (check-in date aboard Ronald Reagan). While Sailors originally in building 3387 will keep the same roommates, there is no set-in-stone way that Sailors assigned to move into building 3333, next August, will be assigned roommates.
“It depends on how the program is being run,” said Lewis. “We had it before that each department owned rooms, so your roommate would be from your department. Right now it's just by seniority to the first available room.”
Sailors had to move out of the HPA barracks before the summer patrol due to HVAC renovations. While the HVAC renovations are scheduled to be completed by August 2018, it could end up taking longer and postponing the move in.
“The HVAC renovation should be done by Aug 2018,” said Lewis. “It may take longer than a year; it’s an eight- floor building getting a new heat/air condition unit.”
Sailors wanting and scheduled to live in HPA rooms should know that they have to follow the resident regulations.
HPA rooms have to be inspection ready Monday through Friday. They will be inspected by Ronald Reagan resident assistants on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and the base can do a room inspection at any time. No members of the opposite sex are allowed in the rooms at any time. Alcohol can only be consumed in the rooms. Smoking is only designated in authorized smoking areas, not in barracks rooms. Giving out your key to your best friend on your duty day can cause you to lose your room.
