The Afghan National Army Special Operations Command’s National Mission Brigade added its second Special Operations Kandak (Battalion) upon the completion of their culmination exercise, Dec. 19, 2017. Based out of Camp Commando, Kabul, ANASOC’s 6th SOK received advanced special operations training, and passed a stringent training program to earn the distinction of the NMB’s 2nd SOK.
The 2nd SOK joins the 1st SOK of the NMB (formerly designated the Ktah Khas) to provide the NMB two light infantry battalions. The battalions are capable of conducting platoon and company level intelligence-driven counterterrorism raids, particularly against high-value individuals, and vehicle interdictions utilizing both ground and air mobility platforms.
“We are ready to fight tonight,” said Col. Khanullah Shuja, NMB commander, after the 2nd SOK completed its exercise.
The NMB provides the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces a rapidly deployable special operations force able to respond to national-level crises throughout Afghanistan. The brigade headquarters element is growing to approximately 200 personnel to provide command and control capabilities for Afghan Special Security Forces elements during contingency operations across the country. The headquarters is scheduled for full operational capability in March 2018.
