Knoxville resident, Lt. Col. David Moss, assumed command of the 241st Engineering and Installation Squadron in Chattanooga, Tenn., on January 6, during a formal ceremony held there.
Lt. Col. Chris Smith stepped down after more than four years of the Chattanooga unit. He moves on to assume command of the Tennessee Air National Guard’s 119th Cyber Operations Squadron in Knoxville, Tenn.
Tennessee’s Assistant Adjutant General-Air, Brig. Gen. Donald Johnson, presided over the ceremony.
“David, I know you are going to take this unit to the next level,” Johnson said.
Moss entered service through the U.S. Navy in 2001. Following Navy Officer School, he held various positions in the Navy prior to transferring his commission to the Tennessee Air National Guard in 2007, initially assigned to the 119th Command and Control Squadron in Knoxville, Tenn.
In December 2013, Moss was selected to attend Intelligence Officer School and was assigned as the Director of Operations for the 237th Intelligence Squadron, part of the 118th Wing at Joint Base Berry Field in Nashville, Tenn. In February 2017, he was selected as the Detachment Commander for the 241st EIS.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Maryville College and a Master’s degree from the University of Kentucky-Martin School of Public Policy. Additionally, he has served in support of Operations Enduring Freedom, Noble Eagle and Inherent Resolve.
“When I look at David Moss, I see a guy who is going to do a fantastic job,” said Smith. “The 241st couldn’t have gotten a better man. I’m proud to turn it over to you.”
“Col. Smith, you raised the bar,” said Moss. “Every time this unit deploys, it exceeds the combatant commander’s expectations. I’m humbled and honored to be part of this team.”
