Afghan Special Security Forces captured 3 kg of solid and liquid opium, and 50 kg of hash seeds during a night raid in Urmuz Bazaar, Now Zad district, Helmand province, Jan 6., 2018. Commandos from the 3rd and 9th Special Operations Kandaks (Battalions) and operators from the National Interdiction Unit eliminated eight Taliban fighters attempting to safeguard the narcotics.
The opium was packaged for immediate sale, indicating the Taliban intent to distribute the narcotics among their fellow citizens. The Taliban have evolved their comprehensive narcotics program, moving from the distribution of cultivated poppy to the full range of heroin production and refinement for sale inside and outside of Afghanistan.
The raid marked the third time in 10 days that the Taliban lost significant amounts of narcotics seized by ASSF in Helmand. On Dec. 29, 7th SOK seized $105,000 worth of heroin and 130 kg of explosives in Garm Ser district. On Jan. 1, 7th SOK destroyed over 1,000 kg of hashish valued at $3.4 million during a mission that liberated five Afghans from a Taliban “Red Unit” prison in Nahr-e Saraj district.
