Senior enlisted leaders discussed the Afghan National Army Special Operations Command’s leadership development and career progression models for Commando Noncommissioned Officers during a meeting in Kabul, Jan. 6, 2018. Command Sgt. Maj. Said Jalal Salat, ANASOC, articulated his vision for the force to Command Sgt. Maj. Roshan Safi, Senior Enlisted Leader to the President of Afghanistan, and Command Sgt. Maj. David Clark, NATO Resolute Support Senior Enlisted Leader.
“Our Commandos exemplify ‘Afghans taking care of Afghans’, Commandos giving back to the force and to their country,” Jalal stated.
The professional development path for the Commandos is of upmost importance to ANA and NATO Resolute Support leaders. The Commandos are doubling in size over the next four years as Afghanistan invests in the force that conducts 70% of the ANA’s offensive ground operations. Four thousand additional Commandos will join Special Operations Kandaks this spring, including the first Cobra Strike Kandak, the special operators first light armor maneuver battalion.
“The main effort from the NCO and Senior NCO perspective in the next 100 days is to make sure the (Special Operations) Corps is number one in priorities going forward,” Clark said.
ANASOC’s NCO career progression includes initial deployment to operational units followed by a programmed assignment as an instructor within the Commando School of Excellence. ANASOC will evolve its SOE Instructor course to intake select Commandos with three to five years in the operational force.
Commando instructors will return to operational assignments once they complete their tour at the SOE. It is the expectation that Commando leaders will serve in teacher, trainer and mentor roles for their personal development and the betterment of the Commando force.
Specially selected Commando NCOs will attend the Afghan Officer Candidate School at the SOE.
