PEARL HARBOR – Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Steven Giordano met with Sailors and toured various commands during a visit to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam (JBPHH), Jan. 8.

The MCPON held an all-hands call at Bloch Arena on JBPHH during the visit, where he addressed hundreds of Sailors from local commands about the increase of suicides in the Navy and the importance of Sailors looking out for each other.

“One Sailor lost is too many,” said Giordano. “You know each other better than anyone else. If you see something which doesn’t feel right, check in with your shipmate. It can make a difference.”

Giordano shared a story about a recent situation where a Sailor noticed something odd with a fellow shipmate. The Sailor stopped to see if everything was alright and, ultimately, prevented an attempted suicide and saved the life of a shipmate.

Electronics Technician Nuclear 1st Class Adam Erinç, stationed at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, stated the MCPON's comments on suicide prevention hit home. Previously, he had helped two of his own Sailors overcome stressful times in their life, one of which had confided in him that he had considered suicide.

“If you see something, do something,” said Erinç. “Everybody has stress. What’s important is being there for them to talk to. When you see something that doesn’t seem right, just taking the time to stop and ask them if they are okay can make the difference.”

During the all-hands call, the MCPON fielded questions from the audience and talked about the future of the Navy and the Sailor 2025 initiative.

Giordano also visited JBPHH Security and the Construction Battalion Maintenance Unit 303 Det. Hawaii during his visit. He will continue his tour by visiting a number of area commands, to include Marine Corps Base Hawaii Kaneohe Bay, Pacific Missile Range Facility and USS Chung Hoon (DDG- 93).
