    The Future USS Portland (LPD 27) Arrives in Manzanillo, Mexico

    MANZANILLO, Mexico – The future USS Portland (LPD 27), along with Assault Craft Unit (ACU) 5 and other embarked Sailors and civilians, arrived to Manzanillo, Mexico for a regularly scheduled port visit Jan. 15.

    While in port, Portland crew members will have a chance to participate in friendship-building and goodwill-generating activities and cultural exchanges.

    Planned engagements include a community relations project and hosting tours for senior Mexican Naval officials, Mexican Navy and Marine personnel, and naval attachés assigned to Mexico.

    Portland is currently transiting to her future homeport in San Diego. The ship departed the Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) Shipbuilding site in Pascagoula, Miss. Dec. 14, 2017.

    The main mission of LPD 17 class amphibious transport dock ships is to transport and deploy the necessary combat and support elements of Marine Expeditionary Units and Brigades. The ships are designed to support over 800 occupants. They have the capability to debark and transport air cushion or conventional landing craft and amphibious vehicles. They also have the capability of landing and launching aircraft.

    Portland is the 11th San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship. She will be commissioned in April in her namesake city of Portland, Ore. and is the third ship to bear this name.

    U.S. 3rd Fleet leads naval forces in the Pacific and provides the realistic, relevant training necessary for an effective global Navy. Third Fleet coordinates with numbered fleets to plan and execute missions based on their complementary strengths to promote ongoing peace, security, and stability throughout the entire Pacific theater of operations.
