FORT HOOD, Texas -- As the wind whipped across Fort Hood and Cooper Field, the Warhorse troopers stood firm, during the change of command ceremony for 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team "Greywolf,", 1st Cavalry Division on Jan. 11.

Greywolf Commander, Col. John K. Woodward, presided over the ceremony as the brigade bid farewell to Lt. Col. Brian E. McCarthy and his family and welcomed Lt. Col. Kevin T. Black and his family, as he takes command of the Warhorse battalion.

McCarthy’s next assignment is the Senior Maneuver Trainer, in Hohenfels, Germany where he will be responsible for overseeing the training of battalions and their commanders on warfighting skills.

"The battalion standing on Cooper Field today represents America's National treasure, the men and women who chose to serve in our Armed Services," said McCarthy. "Leading them as commander of the Warhorse Battalion has been my greatest honor."

Black, an Armor officer, most recently served as the Operations officer as part of the Afghan National Army Special Operations Command, Special Operations Advisory Group, NATO Special Operations Component Command-Afghanistan in Camp Morehead, Afghanistan. In addition, he has served in numerous staff and command roles since receiving his commission in 2001.

"Warhorse, you are getting a very qualified and proven commander in Lt. Col Kevin Black," said Woodward as he closed his speech. "Allison and I are very happy to welcome you and Kim to the Greywolf family. Best of luck as you begin your ride."

The Greywolf Brigade recently completed a nine-month deployment to the Middle East and is currently receiving and resetting equipment in preparation for upcoming gunnery ranges.
