Athletes from across Okinawa crowded the gym floor for the start of the Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Pacific-Wide Basketball Tournament Jan. 11 aboard Camp Foster.
The tournament brought the military community out for a fun-filled weekend to display their talents and participate in some friendly competition.
“This weekend was the MLK Basketball Tournament,” said Seaman Derrick Jessup, a corpsman with 3rd Medical Battalion, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force. “It consists of different teams around the island who get together and play against each other for the MLK trophy.”
Along with the team matchups, athletes were able to compete in several individual contests including a three-point shootout, skills challenge, and a dunk contest.
“In the Marine Corps, we like to compete,” said Michael Davis, the MLK Tournament director and a sports specialist with Semper Fit. “This tournament brings competition from athletes of different units, civilians and prior service members.”
The five-day tournament offered athletes the opportunity to leave it all on the court. With four days of tournament play and one day dedicated to skill challenges, the athletes were pushed to their limit.
“There is a spirit of competition that brings us all together,” said Cpl. Sean Stewart, a postal clerk with Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Installations Pacific-Marine Corps Base Camp Butler, Japan. “Instead of being cooped up in the barracks and feeling home sick, everyone is out here participating and trying to have some fun.”
