NORFOLK, Va. – The crew of the amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5) remembered the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during a quint celebration and cake cutting ceremony Jan 16.

The 89th birthday celebration of Dr. King was organized and hosted by the Bataan Heritage Committee. Participants reflected on Dr. King’s far-reaching message of loving thy neighbor by building communities of unity with strong bonds of kinship that help foster change in the hearts and minds of the American people.

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands in times of challenge and controversy,” said King. “The true neighbor will risk his position, his prestige, and even his life for the welfare of others.”

Dr. King’s questioning attitude towards social injustice and his forcible nonviolent protest and boycotts fostered legislation change for equal education, employment, and housing along with key rights including the voting right act under the Civil Rights bill signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965.

Bataan’s ceremony included readings of Dr. King’s “I have a Dream Speech” and remarks from the Commanding Officer, Capt. Brad Busch.

“Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., optimizes the core value of honor, courage and commitment long before the Navy adopted those value for the Navy and Marine Corps, back in 1992,” said Busch. “I’m very proud of the Sailors of Bataan, who treat each other’s as equals and work on a ship where your character, your ability and your performance is how you’re evaluated.”

The Armed Forces led the country in desegregation, when President Truman signed the executive order 9981 in 1948. Declaring equality of treatment and opportunities for all persons in the Armed Forces, without regards to race, color or national origin.

Busch concluded his Dr. King speech to the crew by saying; “Bataan Sailors will continue to lead from the front, by insuring a fairness of strength in culture and quality aboard our ship, so every Sailor on Bataan understands they are an important and valued member of our combat team.”

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration is one of thirteen recognized observances by Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute and observed by the Department of Defense and U.S. Armed Forces around the world.
