SAN DIEGO (Jan. 24, 2018) - More than 10 Sailors from Commander, Littoral Combat Ship Squadron One (COMLCSRON ONE) volunteered to feed the less fortunate in San Diego at Father Joe’s Village on Wednesday, Jan. 24.

Volunteers spent two hours feeding a line of people that stretched from the lunch counter to the doorway. World-weary and eager faces shone on each of those who were waiting to be served a meal. Those faces, however, changed from sadness to joy after receiving a hot plate of food from a smiling face. It was an emotional day for those who were volunteering.

“I think it’s an amazing opportunity to give back,” said Culinary Specialist 2nd Class Jonathan Beck, from Columbus, Ohio. “I get to go out into the city of San Diego and help out the less fortunate in the community. And, I got to do my rate at the same time!”

Father Joe’s village is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping homeless populations throughout the country. To do this, the village depends on volunteers.

“We are 100% happy to have the Sailors be here,” said Mark Atkins, Father Joe's food service program manager and a San Diego native.

“We usually have just two cooks in the morning and the evening,” continued Atkins. “If we don’t have Sailors or other volunteers come to help out, either the quality of food or the quality of service will not be as efficient as it needs to be because we have more people to feed than volunteers to help out.”

The LCSRON Sailors volunteers included Fire Controlman 2nd Class Charles Scottsmith who enjoyed the opportunity to volunteer.

“Hopefully,” Scottsmith said. “We get to do it more.”

Commander, Littoral Combat Ship Squadron One is located in San Diego and is responsible for manning, training and equipping West Coast based littoral combat ships.
