NAVAL HOSPITAL PENSACOLA, Fla. – Naval Hospital Pensacola’s Pharmacy will receive significant improvements as part of a renovation project scheduled to begin Feb. 1.

The improvements will enhance the overall experience for patients at one of the Navy’s busiest pharmacies.

Naval Hospital Pensacola’s Pharmacy fills over 800,000 prescriptions a year and supports 10 branch clinics located in five states. The renovation project will take about a year to complete, but patients should experience minimal effects during that time.

“We will still fill prescriptions and take care of patients as usual during the renovation project,” said Lt. Cmdr. Marissa Greene, associate director for clinical support services. “We have planned this project to mitigate the impact on our patients as much as possible.”

Some of the improvements to the pharmacy will include a larger lobby area with new furniture, two additional pharmacy windows for patient services, monitors displaying current wait times and six electronic kiosks that patients will use to activate a prescription instead of standing in line to see a pharmacy technician.

The kiosks will offer patients three options to pick-up their prescriptions. Patients can choose to wait for the prescription to be filled, select to return to the pharmacy after two hours or have their prescription sent to the Satellite Pharmacy where it will be available the next business day after 1 p.m. The Satellite Pharmacy is located next to the Commissary and has a drive-thru window. These options currently exist at the pharmacy, but the kiosks will reduce the time it takes a patient to activate their prescription.

“The kiosks will be installed and ready to use by the summer,” said Lt. Donny Le, head pharmacist at NHP. “Not only will the kiosks reduce the time patients have to stand in line, they will help us accurately monitor wait times to identify trends and expedite the pharmacy process.”

The pharmacy will also receive some much need upgrades behind the scenes. The processing and storage areas will be upgraded and expanded, which will improve the work efficiency and environment for the pharmacy staff.

Despite every effort to have minimal impact on patient services during this process, patients may experience slight delays at times. The pharmacy staff will do everything possible to limit these delays, but there are some options available to patients that they can use during the renovation.

Patients can choose to pick-up their refills at the Satellite Pharmacy. The Satellite Pharmacy can be selected using the automated telephone system, (850) 505-6459 or (888) 513-4164, or TRICARE’s Patient Portal online at www.tricareonline.com.

For patients on maintenance medications that require frequent refills, TRICARE’s Pharmacy Home Delivery will ship medications directly to their residence. Patients can receive up to a 90-day prescription for most drugs, but there may be some costs depending on the medication. More information is available at www.tricare.mil/homedelivery.

The pharmacy is just one of several projects NHP is working to modernize the hospital. The hospital’s quarterdeck area is currently being renovated to improve safety and security and should be completed in a few weeks. The hospital is also working to improve exterior lighting at the hospital in preparation for the expansion of Urgent Care hours in the summer.

“We will continue to focus on providing the best care to the most deserving patients that come into our hospital,” said Capt. Amy Branstetter, commanding officer, NHP, “but we also want our patients to have a safe and pleasant environment to receive their care.”

Established in 1826, Naval Hospital Pensacola's mission is to deliver high quality health care to ensure a medically ready force and a ready medical force through strategic partnerships and innovation.
