FORT GEORGE G. MEADE, Md. (NNS) – U.S. Fleet Cyber Command/U.S. 10th Fleet (FCC/C10F) celebrated its 8th anniversary during a ceremony held at its headquarters Jan. 29.
Former Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. Gary Roughead, officially established FCC and re-commissioned C10F on Jan. 29, 2010, to operationalize cyber warfare and achieve operational effects in cyberspace across all dimensions of warfare.
In the same fashion that the historic TENTH Fleet enabled the prosecution of the U-Boat threat and ensured access to the shipping lanes of the Atlantic, FCC and the modern C10F must enable the prosecution of threats in cyber space and ensure the Navy and the Nation have access.
Since its establishment, FCC/C10F has grown into an operational force composed of more than 15,000 Active and Reserve Sailors and civilians organized into 29 active commands, 40 Cyber Mission Force units, and 29 reserve commands around the globe.
“I think where we have made the most progress is integrating the FCC mission sets into the rest of the operational Navy. Our mission sets, which arguably years ago were much more stovepiped, are now much more integrated,” said Vice Adm. Mike Gilday, commander, FCC/C10F. “That extends from the tactical edge with our ships, submarines and aircraft that are deployed all the way up through our other numbered fleet commanders’ day to day operations.”
Gilday closed the ceremony by thanking the men and women of the Information Warfare Community for their dedicated service to the nation.
"Today, Fleet Cyber Command and U.S. 10th Fleet are more relevant than ever before,” Gilday said. “You have made great improvements throughout the fleet and are in the fight every day. You are all warriors; be proud.”
U.S. Fleet Cyber Command serves as the Navy component command to U.S. Strategic Command and U.S. Cyber Command, and the Navy’s Service Cryptologic Component commander under the National Security Agency/Central Security Service. Fleet Cyber Command also reports directly to the Chief of Naval Operations as an Echelon II command.
U.S. 10th Fleet is the operational arm of Fleet Cyber Command and executes its mission through a task force structure similar to other warfare commanders. In this role, C10F provides operational direction through its Maritime Operations Center located at Fort George Meade Md., executing command and control over assigned forces in support of Navy or joint missions in cyber/networks, information operations, electronic warfare, cryptologic/signals intelligence and space.
