SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.-- --

The 50th Space Wing Chaplain’s Office is hosting a free marriage workshop for military couples at the Schriever event center 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Feb. 8.

“This is training for relationships – how they work both good and bad,” said Maj. Martin Adamson, chaplain, 50th SW. “We don’t always get it right, but the point of this workshop is for couples to figure out how they are doing it wrong and to try to fix these problems to get their relationship back on track.”

The day-long class will feature communication exercises, creative date nights, conflict resolution methods and personality profiles. It is through these tools the class strives to help couples discover the essentials for creating a thriving marriage.

An example of an exercise is one spouse from each couple is given a tile, and thereby “has the floor,” to openly discuss issues they have in their relationship.

“There will be subject matter experts coming in and we’ll be there to help,” said Staff Sgt. Joshua Jones non-commissioned officer in-charge of chapel administration. “I’m excited to see what we do and the role we have. It’s nice to know we have these resources here to reach out to experts.”

Adamson said with the frenzy of the holiday season and the stress associated with it coming to an end, it’s important for couples to help build on their relationship’s foundation and fix any strife that may occur.

“Often times, we will see people coming down from the ‘holiday highs,’” Adamson said. “Things kind of cool off and they are no longer super-engaged and there’s a lot of time to think about things, including your relationship.”

With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, maintaining a healthy relationship is as important as ever, and ties-in with the 50th SW priority of “taking care of Airmen and families always,” both through one’s own initiative, and through the support of Schriever family–oriented programs and events such as the workshop.

“Anything we can do to help build relationships is important,” Jones said. “These events help the whole Airman concept, helping them with their families.”

Adamson said he enjoys helping Airmen thrive in their relationships and advancing the 50th SW’s priorities, mission and vision.

“Sometimes, we just do relationships by default, learning by how we grew up and we don’t have much training,” Adamson said. “But relationships are a huge part of our life, so just like our jobs we should try training on it.”

Adamson and Jones encourage Airmen to attend the workshop for themselves and their loved ones.

The next workshop will be a blended family workshop scheduled in May.
