Semper Fit staff alongside Col. Raul Lianez, the base commanding officer of Marine Corps Base Hawaii, held the grand reopening of the base’s High Intensity Tactical Training Center at the Semper Fit gym, MCBH, Feb. 2, 2017.
The renovated HITT center includes a new design and equipment for everyone to use in order to maintain their physical fitness.
“We had talked to Col. Lianez when we started thinking about the renovations that we did to the main fitness center,” said Jon Shiota, the manager in charge of fitness and youth sports with Semper Fit. “One of his initiatives was to build a world class HITT center at this facility to replace the existing one. We converted our old group exercise room into what you see today, and it has everything that our HITT instructors need to conduct training.”
Shiota said the center also provides Force Fitness Instructors the chance to conduct their own exercises.
“This is actually going to provide a space for the FFIs if they want to do classes for their guys,” Shiota said. “They can send their members through our HITT courses, or they can coordinate with us so they can use the room for their own individual unit FFI training.
Herald Oertwig, a HITT instructor with Semper Fit, said the program improves the physical fitness of Marines and, with the new center, it will give them an even better edge.
“From starting this program, I have heard testimonies from Marines saying their Combat and Physical Fitness Test score have gone through the roof,” Oertwig said. “They’re maxing out and now with clear accessibility to everything they’re going to better themselves even further.”
Oertwig said the renovated center has many changes that were made to make it better for everyone.
“It provides a better training facility for people to use, and pursues the image of a more modern design,” Oertwig said. “It has so much more improvements including cooler air, and better accessibility from the inside and outside. It also allows classes to not be interrupted by other people.”
Rexter Alcubilla, the facility manager at Semper Fit gym, said moving the center to the base gym was a great improvement.
“You couldn’t really monitor the old HITT center, and it would be awhile until my staff told me if equipment was broken,” Alcubilla said. “With this new center, we’re able to have our fitness specialists and staff keep up the integrity of the facility so if anything breaks we can attend to it at a faster pace.”
Alcubilla said the center allows additional training and aids in the performance of HITT.
“We’re able to provide more classes and with the new equipment we can enhance the overall program,” Alcubilla said. “People can perform those exercises and movements a little more proficiently thanks to these renovations.”
Alcubilla said the HITT center greatly benefits those aboard Marine Corps Base Hawaii.
“I think it’s just great for the base, the Marines and Semper Fit to have this HITT center,” Alcubilla said. “We got some great feedback from Marines, and the ones who were hesitant about getting the old one shut down were really impressed when we showed them the new facility.”
