SAN DIEGO (NNS) – Sailors from U.S. Fleet Cyber Command/U.S. Tenth Fleet (FCC/C10F) participated in WEST 2018, the premier naval conference and exposition on the West Coast, at the San Diego Convention Center, Feb. 6-8.

Sailors from Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) San Diego, Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station (NCTS) San Diego and Cyber Protection Team 553 were on-hand at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command’s Navy Information Warfare Pavilion, throughout the conference, in order to educate and inform WEST participants how they support the mission of FCC/C10F.

“The Navy Information Warfare community is constantly changing, and participating in the IW Pavilion is an excellent opportunity to see what’s new,” said Cryptologic Technician (Technical) 2nd Class Ariela Nevarez, an operations security instructor at NIOC San Diego. “It’s exciting to see all the capabilities and programs we might see in the near future.”

WEST, now in its 28th year, brings military and industry leaders together in a single locale to encourage discussion with the makers of platforms and the designers of technologies impacting the warfighter and information domain. WEST is co-sponsored by Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) International and the U.S. Naval Institute (USNI).

“Participating in WEST gives our unit the opportunity to explain what we do as a Navy Cyber Protection Team,” said Cryptologic Technician (Networks) 1st class William Weir, a cyber planner assigned to Cyber Protection Team 553. “Not everyone understands what a Navy CPT does, so this forum allows us to discuss our roles and responsibilities with a wide audience.”
Information Systems Technician 1st class William Geise, from NIOC San Diego’s Navy Blue Team West, also took the opportunity to explain how his command provides cyber waterfront support to the Navy.

“Teaching is something I’ve always enjoyed, and that’s why I think given today’s interest in cyberspace operations and cybersecurity, it’s important that we share how Navy Blue Team West and 10th Fleet protects our networks and information systems against different cyber threats.”

Since its establishment, FCC/C10F has grown into an operational force composed of more than 15,000 Active and Reserve Sailors and civilians organized into 29 active commands, 40 Cyber Mission Force units, and 29 reserve commands around the globe. FCC serves as the Navy component command to U.S. Strategic Command and U.S. Cyber Command, and the Navy’s Service Cryptologic Component commander under the National Security Agency/Central Security Service.

C10F is the operational arm of Fleet Cyber Command and executes its mission through a task force structure similar to other warfare commanders. In this role, C10F provides support of Navy or joint missions in cyber/networks, cryptologic/signals intelligence and space.
