FORT STEWART, Ga. -- First Sergeants of 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division test out the Soldier Readiness Test (SRT) Jan. 26, at Fort Stewart, Ga.

The purpose of the Soldier Readiness Test (SRT) is to assess all components of Soldiers’ fitness through their abilities to perform unit-specific combat related tasks and to change the focus of Physical Readiness Training (PRT) to a more holistic, functional fitness program.

The SRT provides leaders an accurate assessment of Soldier fitness by measuring the nine components of physical fitness: explosive power, speed, agility, balance and coordination, muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, and reaction time.

Command Sgt. Maj. Michael McMurdy, senior enlisted advisor of 2nd ABCT led the Spartan Brigade first sergeants through the SRT session and admitted to never scoring less than a 280 on an Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) but still getting nervous.

“It's (SRT) not a test, its an assessment,” said McMurdy, senior enlisted advisor of 2nd ABCT. “Soldiers hear the word test and become nervous. The term assessment will make them feel more comfortable.  There’s no score. It’s a go or no-go.”

The assessment consists of six events and three phases. In phase one and three, all brigade combat teams (BCT) conduct the same fitness events. Phase two is dependent on what kind of BCT the Soldier is assigned to.

In phase one, the Spartan Leaders executed  a 225-lb tire flip, an agility drill, and a 240-lb casualty drag within two minutes. During phase two, they conducted a 45-lb farmers carry within three minutes and then finished phase three with  a 1.5 mile movement that included an under/over obstacle along the way within 18 minutes, for a total combined time of 23 minutes for all three phases.

In addition to the already grueling set of tasks, the uniform for the SRT is the combat uniform with boots, gloves, eye protection, and Integrated Outer Tactical Vest (IOTV) with front and back plates.

“I enjoyed the test because it was more realistic to our day-to-day activity in the military.  Pushups, situps, and a two mile run in shorts doesn't offer that.”  said 1st Sgt. Daniel S. Roney of Headquarter and Headquarters Company, 3rd Combined Arms Battalion, 67th Infantry Regiment, 2 ABCT, 3ID, “ I believe the overall time you have to finish should be lowered to somewhere in the 18-20 minute range.”

“The SRT allows leaders to assess their Soldiers on what we really do in combat and in everyday life,” said Mcmurdy. “This assessment will not replace the Army Physical Fitness Test. ”
