The day started off with Marines assisting a Rockport resident with cleaning his partially destroyed garage. The garage had received damage from Hurricane Harvey. Marines sorted through the possessions the homeowner wanted to keep and discard. Then, they finished tearing down the garage and discarded the wooden remains.
“This was an awesome experience, I am so glad I had the opportunity to help out a patriotic family in their time of need,” says Marine Corporal Jessica A. Pierce, of Santa Rita, Guam, “I wasn’t stationed in San Antonio when Hurricane Harvey struck, but I knew that there were a lot of families in the Rockport area in need. I’d wanted to help out in some way as soon as I moved here. Today was the day we helped someone tear down a garage and start over in rebuilding their lives.”
Seeing the gratitude and hope in the Rockport families face after the damaged garage was removed was the best part, said Marine Sergeant Ellie M. Hinojosa, a Dallas, Texas native.
“I knew we were going to help a family recover from the Hurricane Harvey damage to their house, so the manual labor part was expected, but I would’ve never expected to feel emotionally invested. We met their family and they were so welcoming and open with us. They really changed our lives as much as we changed theirs.”
Later that day, the Marines met up with CitiHope and The US Wrestling Foundation representatives at Veterans Memorial High School to present a family with keys to their renovated home. The presentation took place in the gym, right before a wrestling meet. In attendance were Olympic wrestling coach Dan Russell and Olympic medalist James Green, who were also involved in the recovery in Rockport.

The Recruiting Station San Antonio Commanding Officer said it was an honor to be a part of the Hurricane Harvey relief efforts in partnership with The US Wrestling Foundation and CitiHope.
“The Marines are proud to join and recognize the efforts of the Rockport community,” said Major Christopher R. Richardella, a Washington, DC native. “Like Marines, the Rockport community faced adversity. The community came together, adapted and overcame the challenges they faced. We’re proud to stand in your ranks and join in this great effort.”
