PENSACOLA, Fla. -- Chief of Naval Personnel Vice Adm. Robert P. Burke announced the results of the fiscal year 2017 Manpower, Personnel, Training and Education Retention Excellence Awards, Feb. 7

The Center for Information Warfare Training (CIWT) and five other commands and detachments within its domain were among those recognized. Other CIWT winners include Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) Virginia Beach; IWTC Corry Station; IWTC San Diego; CIWT Det. Goodfellow Air Force Base; and CIWT Det. Fort Gordon.

With the exception of IWTC San Diego, all CIWT recipients are repeat winners from fiscal year 2016 awards.

"One of our greatest challenges today is attracting, recruiting and retaining quality Sailors, and this award is a direct reflection of our commands' and detachments' leadership at every level from the deck plates to the commanding officers," said CIWT Command Master Chief Michael Bates. "They have implemented and maintained key Sailor programs that form the foundation of a successful retention effort, which is a critical strategic investment in our Navy's future."

The Retention Excellence Award was established to recognize commands for sustaining superior levels of military retention, recognizing superior accomplishment in executing programs and policies that best enable Sailors to succeed in their careers.

“These efforts combine to make up a force of the right Sailors, with the right skills, ready to answer all bells, today and into the future,” Burke wrote in his message.

To qualify for the award, commands must achieve a minimum score of 90 points on their annual command career information program review. Other factors which go toward the award include benchmark, or retention numbers, which show the effectiveness of the command's retention program.

Center for Information Warfare Training delivers trained information warfare professionals to the Navy and joint services, enabling optimal performance of information warfare across the full spectrum of military operations.
