The first Marine Expeditionary Force Support Battalion in the Marine Corps was activated during a ceremony at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Feb. 9, 2018.
The new battalion, part of the II MEF Information Group, is designed to provide and coordinate combat-service support as well as security and administrative services to the MEF Command Element or Marine Expeditionary Brigade Command Element and MEF Information Group in order to sustain command and control of Marine Air-Ground Task Force operations.
“By taking the administrative and support responsibilities off the MEF Information Group, it enables the MIG to utilize the information assets and capabilities and focus its efforts on information operations,” said Lt. Col. Joshua Whamond, the MSB commander.
Leading the way in the restructure schedule, the MSB intends to meet the evolving demand to equip commanders with necessary resources by providing the MEF with administrative and logistical support.
The battalion is the first of its kind in the Marine Corps, said Col. David S. Owen, the commanding officer of II MIG.
“This is a historic day for II MEF and the Marine Corps,” he said
