Story by Staff Sgt. Jennifer Bunn

    2d Cavalry Regiment

GRAFENWOEHR, Germany - Combat medics assigned to 2d Cavalry Regiment helped conduct a Combat Life Saver course for several soldiers from the 11th Light Infantry Battalion, 1st Infantry Brigade, Georgian Land Forces, who will be deploying to Afghanistan with U.S. Marine Corpsmen in the near future. The course took place in the Grafenwoehr Training Area Feb. 5 – 9, 2018.

The 2CR medics usually only instruct CLS class for 2CR Soldiers, but the instructors at the Medical Simulation Training Center, 7th Army Training Command’s Combined Arms Training Center, asked for help to temporarily fill instructor slots.

“To every 50 students we need three dedicated instructors,” said Sgt. 1st Class Sherrie Porter, instructor/writer for the MSTC. “So in order to meet the student to instructor ratio, which is a guide line from the training command and U.S. Army Medical Command, we have to augment.”

Sgt. Staci Daniel, a medical evacuation team leader assigned to 1st Squadron, 2CR, has taught several classes at her unit and said this was just another routine CLS class except for the language barrier. This time she had to use an interpreter, a Georgian officer who came with the soldiers.

“He is really good at speaking English so, it was easy to just slow down the classes and let him translate in short bursts between me talking,” she said.

A CLS class is geared toward teaching the student how to asses and treat a casualty quickly during a tactical situation, and evacuate them to safety and advanced medical care.

The five-day course consisted of classroom instruction and practical application that included treating serious wounds and injuries such as limb amputation and excessive bleeding, and clearing and maintaining an airway.

Multinational training is actually common place while being assigned to 2d Cavalry Regiment. Spc. Wesley Hobson, a combat medic assigned to 4th Squadron has trained with Estonians during Saber Strike and Hungarians during Brave Warrior.

During this class, Hobson gave classroom instruction and helped students during the hands on portion of class. He said he quickly fell into the rhythm of teaching with an interpreter.

“I do not think it makes it harder, you just really have to stick to the subject,” he explained. “You can’t go off on any tangents of your own knowledge, so you go by the book and slides.”

Porter says she looks forward to having more combat medics from 2CR and other units in the area to help augment her team of three. When more soldiers come together, different perspectives are introduced.

“This will only help our training, especially the actual hands on portion,” she said. “Different soldiers instructing leads to creative new ideas in the training environment that can be used down the road.”

Sgt. Eric Loredo, a combat medic assigned to Regimental Support Squadron, 2CR, appreciated the opportunity to work with very knowledgeable instructors at the MSTC and will take what he learned back to his unit to use.

“I think when they pull (instructors) from units around them it is beneficial for them and us as well,” Loredo said. “We get that experience with training people outside of our group and develop ourselves as teaches.”

There is no substitute for hard work and dedication. The three 2CR Soldiers stood up to the task given to them and accomplished the mission.

“They have been an absolute fantastic asset,” said Porter. “They’ve taken amazing amounts of initiative and they’ve taken guidance very well. I’d take them back in a heartbeat.”
