From Naval Education and Training Command
Naval Education and Training Command (NETC) and 68 of NETC’s subordinate commands, detachments and learning sites earned the fiscal year 2017 Manpower, Personnel, Training and Education (MPT&E) Retention Excellence Award (REA) as announced Feb. 7 by Chief of Naval Personnel.
To qualify for the award, commands must achieve a minimum score of 90 points on their annual command career information program review. The review focuses on a variety of areas dealing with career development programs and support systems.
“A lot of hard work goes into developing and supporting our Sailors as they navigate through their careers,” said Master Chief Navy Counselor Jake Brady, NETC force retention. “Retention of every capable Sailor is critical to the operational readiness of the Navy, and at NETC and throughout our training domain, we are focused on force development and our greatest resource, our people.”
Each command is evaluated on program aspects such as how the command accomplishes the career development program and team and board requirements; leadership engagement; advancement statistics; continuing education support through programs such as tuition assistance; training and how Sailors learn about career development opportunities; success workshops; family readiness; sponsor and indoctrination programs; and career counseling.
The number of REA winners for the NETC domain improved from 59 percent in fiscal year 2016 to 78 percent this past year.
"The increase from last year for the domain is due to the full engagement of the command career counselors," said Brady. "They continually monitor and provide guidance and training to their units and inspect their programs annually."
Brady said that most of the commands within the NETC domain utilize collateral-duty career counselors who have attended the Navy command career counselor course taught by NETC general skills training instructors in Norfolk and San Diego.
“It’s been proven that a command with a solid career development program in place garners higher retention numbers,” said Brady. “These commands are fully engaged from the triad down to the divisional career counselor. We’re very proud of what our career counselors are doing for our Sailors every day, and our goal is to keep getting better. Our Sailors deserve it.”
