VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Students in the Information Professional Basic Course (IPBC) at Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) Virginia Beach took part in a tour of the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), Jan. 24.

The tour was hosted by the ship’s combat systems department and provided valuable community insight into the expectations of junior information professional (IP) officers assuming division officer roles in the afloat environment to include organization, mission sets and training cycles for carrier strike group operations. Additionally, the students gained direct exposure to critical communications processes and shipboard command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence (C4I) configurations to provide a holistic view of integrated information warfare operations supporting the information warfare commander.

Exploring the systems on an afloat platform and talking to the personnel who work on those systems is an important component of the course. Both the students and staff walk away with gained knowledge and the participating commands get to know the next IP officers to join the fleet.

The tour was organized by IWTC Virginia Beach’s afloat instructors, Lt. Jacob Kuehl and Lt. Wade Henderson, as part of their efforts to develop new topics regarding shipboard communications and tie those topics to command visits where students receive first-hand exposure to the systems in an operational environment.

“These are exciting times for our community and the Navy as we train and prepare our future leaders,” said Lt. Cmdr. Stan Ware, the IPBC department head. “I am proud to be part of a great team in this journey as we deliver relevant training across the different pillars within the IP community. I know our officers will be trained and ready to meet the mission when required.”

The CVN 77 tour was the fourth conducted by the relatively new 20-week IPBC onboard a carrier platform. The first three visits were conducted aboard the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78).

“The feedback from our students has been overwhelmingly positive, and they have remarked on the knowledge and experience they took away from the visit,” said IWTC Virginia Beach’s commanding officer, Cmdr. Andrew Boyden. “Fleet feedback continues to point to the fact that we are delivering qualified officers to the fleet. Tours like this help reinforce the investment. My thanks to the CO of CVN 77 and his team”.

IWTC Virginia Beach, as part of the Center for Information Warfare Training, provides a continuum of training to Navy and joint service personnel, preparing them to conduct information warfare (IW) across the full spectrum of military operations.

IWTC Virginia Beach currently offers 69 courses of instruction in information technology, cryptology, and intelligence with an instructor and support staff of 290 military, civilian, and contract members who train over 6,300 students every year at five training sites in the Hampton Roads area. It is one of four training commands under Center for Information Warfare Training, and also oversees learning sites at Jacksonville and Mayport, Florida; Kings Bay, Georgia; and Groton, Connecticut to continue aligning information warfare community training.
