CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – Air Force Capt. Brandon Mueller, from Greenleaf, Wisc., won a silver medal in Greco-Roman wrestling and a bronze medal in Freestyle at the 2018 Armed Forces Wrestling championship.

The annual championship featuring teams from the Army, Marines, Navy and Air Force, was held at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C., February 24-25.

Mueller competed as a member of the All-Air Force team at 77 kg in Greco-Roman and 79 kg in Freestyle.

“I wanted to become a part of this team because I’ve always loved the sport,” said Mueller. “The competition, the grind and the team are all the reasons I wanted to do this. Even after I took a break for a few years, I was still hungry to wrestle again.”

Mueller defeated his Navy opponent 8-0 due to technical superiority and pinned his Marine Corps opponent to earn silver for his weight class in the Greco-Roman competion. He pinned his Navy opponent to earn bronze in Freestyle.

Mueller said being a part of the team has taught him alot about leadership.

“I really enjoy that because I get to interact with a lot of different folks,” said Mueller. “The wrestling mindset is really applicable to a lot of different areas like pushing through adversity. It doesn’t matter if it’s a problem you’re dealing with like program management or an issue on the wrestling mat, it can help you figure out how to focus on those issues and overcome them.”

The AFWC is comprised of three championship competitions that include Greco-Roman, Men’s Freestyle and Women’s Freestyle wrestling. Each men’s style consists of 10 weight classes and one Women’s Freestyle match in the 55kg weight class between Army and Navy.

The Armed Forces Sports program is the culmination of each branch of services’ sports and fitness program. Service members participate and compete at unit level intramurals and advance to the All-Service level where they can compete in national and international competitions.

The wrestlers that competed at this year’s Armed Forces Wrestling championship who finished in the top three of the Greco-Roman weight classes will qualify to compete at the U.S. Greco-Roman World Team Trials in Tulsa, Okla., in June. If the wrestler qualifies there, they will earn a spot on Team USA and represent the United States at the Wrestling World Championships in Budapest, Hungary this October.

Mueller graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 2013 and is stationed at Kirkland Air Force Base in Albuquerque.
