The New York City Recruiting Battalion bid a fond farewell to CSM Charles J. Peterson II, and welcomed CSM Latosha Ravenell to Fort Hamilton in a Change of Responsibility ceremony, Brooklyn, New York, Feb. 23, 2018.

Lt. Col. Juddson Floris, commander of the NYC Recruiting Battalion, took command of the battalion last July. He praised CSM Peterson for the help transitioning from his previous position at the Pentagon to recruiting.

“His belief in the Army permeates every hall he walks down, every recruiting station he goes into, and every building he enters,” said Floris.

“I know whenever a leader changes in a large organization, usually it accompanies a host of numbers, stats, and data, but what always hit home for me the most was that in this business it was never about the numbers. It was about leadership and coming into work every single day and inspiring not just the next generation of recruiters but the next generation of Soldiers.”

For CSM Peterson, who has over 26 years in recruiting, the importance of leadership left a strong impression on him from his own experience of joining the Army in 1989, and was further strengthened when he joined the NYC Recruiting Battalion two years ago.

“One of the first things that transpired was that I went down to Ground Zero, understanding that most of our force today has enlisted or joined the U.S. Army as a result of what took place on September 11,” he said, “You cannot put a price tag on that level of commitment.”

Incoming CSM Ravenell thanked CSM Peterson for his hard work and said she looked forward to the intensity and diversity of New York City. CSM Ravenell has over 20 years of recruiting experience ranging from the schoolhouse to command positions.

“I look forward to our journey together in support of this mission. Today marks a special day that [we] do not take lightly,” said Ravenell. She reinforced CSM Peterson’s focus on leadership.

“Each and every one of us will impact this organization as long as we wake up each morning and conquer the day. I want you to think about where you’ve been; I want you to think about why you’re here; I need you to think about our profession,” she said.

As CSM Peterson, whose next duty station is Nevada, ceded the battalion to CSM Ravenell, he reminded the Soldiers of their duties as leaders.

“To treat people with dignity and respect, regardless of their race, their sexual orientation, gender, ethnicity, religious background,” he said. “It’s to be that beacon [that makes people say] I’m glad I came into the presence of you as a leader.”
