Members of the installation community participated in the post observance of African-American History Month on Feb. 15, 2018, at Fort McCoy, Wis.
Freelance historic interpreter William "Bill" Thompson of Minneapolis served as the guest speaker for the event.
He discussed the significant contributions of African Americans during World War I.
Dozens of Fort McCoy community members attended the annual event that was coordinated by Fort McCoy's Regional Training Site-Maintenance.
“From the early days of the American Revolution to the trenches of World War I and II; from the jungles of Vietnam to the deserts and mountains of Iraq and Afghanistan, and present day missions around the world, African Americans have honorably served to defend this great nation,” a Department of Defense memo states about the contributions of African Americans to the nation's defense.
