FORT DRUM, New York (February 28, 2018) – The 3rd Battalion 6th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (LI), recently completed the Top Gun and Top Fire Direction Center competition here, and the results are in. The battalion’s 5th Section, 2nd Platoon, Charlie Battery won the Top Gun award and 2nd Platoon, FDC Charlie Battery won the Top FDC.
The competition tested the skills and proficiencies of each gun and FDC section, as well as Soldiers’ occupational competencies. The Top Gun awardees were led by Chief Staff Sgt. Patrick McLoughlin. Top FDC winners were led by Fire Direction Officer 2nd Lt. Kaitlin Phelan and Chief Staff Sgt. Michael Capo.
“The purpose of the event,” said Lt. Col. Thomas Goettke, 3-6 FA Commander, “was to improve attention, increase motivation, sustain an effort toward a goal, and to make a more enduring memory of the training for the Solider whether that be good or bad.”
The events consisted of an Artillery Skills Proficiency Test, an Army Physical Fitness Test, a 12-mile ruck march and a Table V evaluation to certify each section.
The event put a competitive edge on the tasks and training objectives that each gun and FDC section are required to certify in semi-annually.
In addition to the graded events, 3-6 FA partnered with 3rd General Support Aviation Battalion, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade to train on air assault gun raids as well as troopers from 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, to conduct artillery calls for fire.
The Top Gun/Top FDC challenge was a way for the battalion to build esprit de corps within each gun and FDC section as well as the battalion as a whole. Congratulations to the winners! Swift and Bold!
