AURORA, Colo. (NNS) – Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) Colorado recently established the John T. Larimer Mentor Award to honor the memory of a Sailor from the command who was lost in the 2012 Aurora Theater shooting.
Cryptologic Technician (Technical) 3rd Class John T. Larimer was stationed at NIOC Colorado during the Aurora Theater shooting where he selflessly protected his girlfriend, saving her life, but tragically died in the process.
“During his time at NIOC Colorado, Larimer was recognized as a fantastic mentor by his peers and protégées,” said Cryptologic Technician (Technical) 1st Class Adam Jarecki, program coordinator. “His willingness to help others was a part of who Larimer was and his loss was felt across NIOC Colorado.”
The John T. Larimer Mentor Award is a peer nominated award, available to pay grades E-1 through O-5 that helps to recognize Sailors who affect peoples’ lives for the better by creating an environment of trust that supports the sharing of knowledge and creates better Sailors throughout the command.
“There are not many ways to acknowledge those Sailors who go above and beyond to help their peers and junior Sailors succeed,” said Cryptologic Technician (Technical) 3rd Class Summer Burgess. “I would not be where I am today in the Navy without my mentor, and this award provides an opportunity to recognize those who uplift their peers and keep their best interests in-mind.”
NIOC Colorado established the John T. Larimer Mentor Award in an effort to encourage Sailors at the command to support and mentor their fellow Sailors whether officially or unofficially.
Cryptologic Technician (Technical) 1st Class Erin O’Brien discussed how having a strong impact can stay with Sailors throughout their careers.
“When considering someone for this award, which preserves Larimer’s legacy of mentorship, it is important to remember how provided mentorship to everyone he worked with while having the greatest impact on his peers,” said O’Brien.
“He lived his life the same way he left this world, through selfless acts for others. He provided a great example by assisting junior Sailors in career advancement, personal goals and personal guidance that will continue to live on through Sailors at the command.”
