Senior Airman Dana Rolfes works in generator maintenance at the 179th Airlift Wing in Mansfield, Ohio.
“We’re in charge of making sure there’s standby power at all important facilities,” said Rolfes. “The mission for this section is to make sure that facilities have back up power in case of an emergency so that they can continue their mission.”
Rolfes has encountered lots of success in the guard. In her recent deployment, her team saved ten lives in the form of catching ten planes with the Air Craft rescue. Her career however, has not been without difficulties. She believes in investing yourself in the people around you and letting them help lead you to success.
Rolfes is the only woman in her section. With the female enlistment rate being only 19% in the Air Force currently, women at the 179th are making history every day. Rolfes has immense pride in being part of this history;
“I feel a sense of responsibility and honor,” said Rolfes. “Being a part of this mission makes me proud. I feel a sense of responsibility and honor. I love telling people what I do.”
Public perception of women in the military has changed over time. Rolfes however, thinks the public perception of women who serve is spot on.
“I think that females in the military are perceived as strong, and I don’t think we should change that, because we are.”
