EVERETT, Wash. – Service members from the Army and Navy met on the ice at the Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett for the 3rd annual Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) sponsored Pacific Northwest (PNW) Army vs. Navy hockey game, March 3.
In what was a hard-fought physical match, Navy outscored Army 7-5 to pick up their first victory in their three meetings.
“I couldn’t be prouder of the guys today,” said Navy coach and Naval Station Everett’s intramural sports coordinator, Sean Joyce. “I wish we could have had more time to practice, but despite the short order, we were able to really put it together and do a good job.”
The Navy team consisted of enlisted and commissioned officers from sea and shore commands throughout Navy Region Northwest, while the Army team consisted of members from Joint Base Lewis-McCord.
“Hockey is a very small community, and we went out there and had a war on the ice, but it’s just a great experience going against the Army team and really creates a sense of camaraderie,” said Religious Programs Specialist 2nd Class Andrew Claveau, assigned to Naval Submarine Support Center-Bangor, who was playing in his second PNW Army-Navy game.
After falling behind 4-2 in the first period, team Navy clawed and scraped their way into the lead during the third and final period.
“We came out and had a rough first period, but we pulled it together for the second and third periods, and our goalie [Lt. Nic Haupt] played a great game, he really played a big role in the win,” said Claveau.
“Coming from behind after being down two goals, and the asserting ourselves while holding onto the lead was a great thing to see,” said Joyce. “We showed a lot of fight and determination out there.”
