Members of the local and U.S. communities gathered for a Camp Commanders Cup softball tournament March 10 aboard Camp Kinser.

The tournament invited members of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force 15th Brigade on base for a day of laughs, food and friendship.

“This tournament helps us build comradery and team spirit between the two units,” said 1st Lt. Hannah Crawford, the camp services officer for Camp Kinser. “We do exercises with the JGSDF, so bringing them on base for just a normal morale and welfare event helps us build relationships.”

Four teams participated in the tournament. JGSDF held two of the spots and Combat Logistics Regiment 35 and Headquarters Regiment held the other two. Family and friends cheered from the stands as players batted and fielded the ball.

“Having events like this will help us better work together,” said Ryuichi Asano, a player on the JGSDF team. “By being here it helps us all build friendships.”

This was the first time in two years Camp Kinser has hosted the softball tournament inviting JGSDF. Camp Kinser plans to make this an annual event in the future.

“Being out here helps builds us together as a team,” said Lance Cpl. Shaquira Dailey, an administrative specialist with 3rd Marine Logistics Group. “When we usually see each other it’s all about work, so it's good to be here relaxed and just enjoying ourselves.”
