Marines with II Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group participated in the II MIG Field Exercise at Camp Davis, North Carolina, Feb. 28 - March 7, 2018.
Throughout the training, Marines conducted intelligence operations, command and control, combat service support and provided a law enforcement capability.
The exercise provided II MIG with an opportunity to rehearse an echeloning of forces, including military operations on urban terrain, in support of a Marine Air Ground Task Force Command Element and operations in the information environment.
“Marines learned MOUT in two parts,” said Capt. Lawrence Andrus, the lead MOUT instructor with 8th Communications Battalion, II MIG. “First, how do they get to the objective? Second, they learned how to conduct actions on the objective. They also learned the importance of conducting reconnaissance and validating assumptions about the enemy's composition, disposition and strengths prior to attacking.”
II MIG Marines also fired the M2 .50 caliber machine gun and Mark 19 40 mm grenade machine gun to increase their proficiency with the weapon systems while executing heavy machine gun courses of fire.
The Marines were expected to use the training they received to accomplish the mission quickly and effectively.
“Marines had to develop a plan and figure out how to dismount under fire and clear the building that they were receiving fire from,” said Andrus. “They were able to apply what they learned, decide on an action and execute in a scenario in which there were no pre-approved solutions.”
The field exercise provided Marines a chance to conduct information operations within a simulated and uncontrolled environment.
“The information warfare coordination center brings to the MAGTF commander the ability to plan, coordinate and execute information warfare within the operating environment,” said Capt. Michael Barnum, an information warfare planner with II MIG.
The exercise was set in an expeditionary environment to provide a realistic setting for the Marines.
“We try to do this at least twice annually to work on our readiness across all the different units,” said Col. David S. Owen, the commanding officer of II MIG.
II MIG executed a simulated potential ship to shore movement and conducted combat operation center responsibilities, exercising unit mission essential tasks and Marine Corps common skills training.
“We’ve been continuing to build our capabilities and conduct training within the group as part of the Marine Corps future force 2025 effort,” said Owen. “This exercise marks the first time that our MEF support battalion is out participating in this exercise. From there we will continue to build and support the commandant’s vision of 21st century warfighting.”
