BANGLADESH (March 12, 2018) - The closing ceremony for Exercise Shanti Doot 4 was held on March 12, 2018, at the Ordnance Centre and School, Rajendrapur Cantonment, Bangladesh. Shanti Doot is a multinational United Nations peacekeeping exercise with more than 1,000 participants from more than 30 countries designed to provide pre-deployment training to U.N. partner countries in preparation for real-world peacekeeping operations.

Shanti Doot 4 was the most recent exercise held in the Indo-Pacific region by the Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI), with the aim of increasing Peacekeeping Capabilities and capacities for partner nations and promoting security and peace regionally and globally.

“This Shanti Doot/GPOI multinational peacekeeping exercise is one of the largest international peacekeeping training events that will occur anywhere in the world this year and you are a part of it,” said Michael Smith, United States State Department Director, Office of Global Programs and Initiatives. “Take these experiences back to your units and teach those who were not able to be here with you. Continue to develop the relationships you have established; you may find yourselves serving together on mission. The challenges you will face will be difficult, but I tell you this; there is no mission nobler, and there is no job more rewarding.”

Shanti Doot 4 involved staff training, classroom briefs and field training exercises led by subject matter experts from different nations including the U.S, Bangladesh, Australia, Canada, Nepal, Cambodia and many more. The goal of this exercise was to strengthen and develop global partnerships and increase the peacekeeping capabilities and capacities of all nations involved in peacekeeping for the United Nations.

The training at Shanti Doot 4 was run by a large cadre of international instructors with extensive real world and peacekeeping experience. These instructors not only taught classes to the platoons of peacekeepers who attended Shanti Doot, but also shared knowledge, skills and techniques with each other.

By training in a multinational manner Shanti Doot 4 allowed the flow of ideas, cultures, techniques and experiences with the end goal of creating more successful and effective peacekeeping missions in the future.

“Thank you for your hard work and commitment to peacekeeping,” Smith said. “The United States appreciates our partnerships with the countries that you all represent. Events like this strengthen these relationships and reaffirm our commitments to U.N. Peacekeeping missions, mandates and tasks; which supports the rules-based international order. A system that benefits all nations and enhances peace and security thought the world. I hope this training has better prepared you for future assignments in peacekeeping operations.”
